Our research considers the interactions of complex fault systems in three-dimensions, with an emphasis on understanding earthquake behavior. This involves the construction of detailed 3D fault-and-velocity models using seismic reflection data, well logs, surface geology, and precisely relocated earthquakes. These efforts make use of extensive geological and geophysical databases provided by petroleum industry sponsors, and also involve acquisition of high-resolution seismic reflection and shallow borehole data. | ||

Furthermore, through collaboration with scientists of the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) and support of the NEHRP Program, we have develop and maintain a set of reference 3D structural models for southern California, including the Community Velocity (CVM-H) and Community Fault (CFM) models. These models support regional hazard assessment and provide a means to address broader scientific questions involving the spatial and temporal interactions of faults. Thus, our efforts range from source characterization to strong ground motion prediction, bridging geology and geophysics to promote fundamental advances in our understanding of earthquake behavior.
