    CFM 2 trace map

    We generated fault traces from the 3d fault representation of CFM 2.0 by extracting those vertices which are located on the topographic surface or - in the case of blind faults - define the upper tip line of the fault. This trace map is available in three data formats:

    a) ASCII text. The format is simply fault name, x coordinate, y coordinate, z coordinate with the first and last point being the fault terminations: cfm_2_final_traces.txt

    b) DXF. DXF is a standard CAD format. Each fault constitutes a single polygon which has the name of the fault: cfm_2_final_traces.dxf

    c) Shapefile. Shapefile is a standard GIS format. The shapefile was generated with ARC. It contains each fault as a named polygon is geospatially registered. Since shapefiles are a number of associated files, the complete set of files is made available in a tar archive: cfm_2_final_traces_shapefile.tar

    In all files, coordinates are given in the UTM zone 11, NAD 27 projection. One could use proj to reproject to another projection or geographic coordinates.

    There are three version:
    a) tsurfs with 4 borderstones (.ts);
    b) name and 4 corner points at variable depth (.4cvd);
    c) name and the 2 upper and lower points at an averaged constant depth (.4cad).

    Download the dip-depth file with constant corner points: cfm-r-3.0.4cad

    Each fault was subdivided into 5km or longer patches. The downdip sides of each patch are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the strike line (the fault trace in map view). The lower corner points are at the depth of the seismogenic thickness surface used in CFM. Coordinates in all files are given in the UTM zone 11, NAD 27 projection.

    For each patch a triangulated gocad tsurf description exists. This description includes markers for the vertices of the corner points. In a first processing step the vertex locations of all corner points for each patch along with the name of the patch were extracted from the gocad description. The vertices were then sorted according to depth. The lower and upper corner point pair were also reordered according to their easting. This sorting results in most cases in the downdip sides of each polygon being defined by the 1st and 3rd, and 2nd and 4th point. At this point both the upper and lower pair has variable depths for each corner. An additional calculation averages these depths for each pair but does not modify the easting and northing. Finally the dip for each side is calculated given the corner point sorting.

    The .4cad and .4cvd files are ASCII files with the name, dip, depth and four corners in one line for each fault patch.

    The data are in in this order:

    name dipA dipB depthA depthB topA topB xdA xdB xtA xtB ydA ydB ytA ytB

    where

    name: gocad name of fault
    dipA: dip at side A
    dipB: dip at side B
    depthA: depth at side A
    depthB: depth at side B
    topA: top elevation at side A
    topB: top elevation at side B
